MAKERSPACE 1st-YEAR TRAINING (M1T)

We offer a special maker training program for First Years to quickly get you up to speed on the most common tools, get you access to key makerspaces, and get some Makerbucks to spend on supplies. The trainings are run by experienced student mentors and include practice on machines such as laser cutters, 3D printers, drill presses, and bandsaws.

Choose Your Training Experience

Just as you can select your preferred version of Physics as a First Year student, you can now select from one of several different training experiences. You'll get the same access to makerspaces, free tools, T-shirt, and Makerbucks no matter which you choose.

Digital Fabrication

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Learn to use an FDM 3D Printer and a Laser Cutter to load, process, and cut/print a design. WHAT YOU'LL MAKE A 3D printed and a laser cut part. TOTAL TIME: 1x 2-hour Session (2 hours total) This is the traditional First Year training taught in Metropolis. Get started using the makerspaces quickly and start making your own projects.

Manual Fabrication

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Learn to use the Bandsaw, the Drill Press, and Sanders. WHAT YOU'LL MAKE Make a fun shaped wooden candle holder. TOTAL TIME: 1x 2-hour Session (2 hours total) This is the traditional First Year training taught in Metropolis. Get started using the makerspaces quickly and start making your own projects.

Digital Clock (Device Class)

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Learn to use the Laser Cutter, 3D Printer, and basic soldering. WHAT YOU'LL MAKE A "Lixie Clock" with a wooden case, basic electronics, and LED numerals. TOTAL TIME: 2x 2-hour Sessions (4 hours total) This is a NEW, LONGER FORMAT training taught at the SHED makerspace. Use the extra class time to BUILD A COMPLETE DEVICE TO TAKE HOME, with multiple parts.

1st-Year Training: Digital and Manual Fab

This 2-hour tool-focused First Year training program is designed to get you oriented and comfortable with basic tools quickly, so you can start working on your own projects in the Metropolis (6C-006B) and The Deep (37-027) makerspaces. Sign up for a short orientation (Step 1 below) which will give you access to both makerspaces, then sign up for a 2-hour First Year training (Step 2 below). Take a short quiz and collect your free Tools, T-shirt, and Makerbucks!

1. Take a Shop Orientation (30 min)

Sign up for a 30 minute safety orientation at METROPOLIS or THE DEEP. Orientations happen during Open Hours, several times a week. Either scan the QR code on the left with your phone or follow the link below to open the sign-up calendar in a new browser tab.

2. 1st-YEAR TRAINING (2 hrs)

Sign up for and attend your choice of a First Year in-person training session. Trainings are posted by the 3rd week of the semester and happen several times a week. You can choose between MANUAL FABRICATION (drill presses, bandsaws, wood tools) and DIGITAL FABRICATION (laser cutters, 3D printers). 3. QUIZ

After you attend training, you'll receive an email follow-up with a link to the study guide and the final quiz. Complete the quiz and you're done!

4. TOOLBOX and T-SHIRT

After you complete your quiz, be sure to pick up your T-Shirt at METROPOLIS! And while you're there, spend some of your Makerbucks on materials, stay for OPEN HOURS and make something!
